The business issue

Telecoms spend typically represents some 10-20% of a company’s IT operational budget but management of it is the real challenge.  The problem is that ‘the devil is in the detail’ and it is very difficult to maintain an up to date asset register as a basis for effective management.

In these circumstances it is impossible to know whether you have the right contracts in place, are receiving the services you have contracted for, or are getting a good financial deal.
 

Problems experienced

The underlying problem faced by companies is understanding and managing their telecoms usage – landline, mobiles and WANs. The absence of a means of doing this effectively results in:

  • There being no detailed up to date telecoms asset register;
  • Confusion about exactly what is being provided by the multiple suppliers delivering services in this area;
  • No means of monitoring and managing contracts and suppliers on a day to day basis;
  • No effective basis for negotiating new contracts from a position of knowledge;
  • No basis to facilitate technology investment decisions about alternative or competing solutions;
  • No means of monitoring costs and securing savings on a continuous basis.

What is worse is that the suppliers often do not have an accurate understanding themselves of the services they are supposed to be supplying.
